Potential HGV drivers warned about fake web training

A BBC TV programme has warned would-be HGV drivers of the dangers of fake web-based training companies claiming to offer a one-stop-shop for new drivers.The BBC’s consumer affairs show You’ve Been Scammed, which aired on Monday morning, featured 23-year-old Steve, who was duped out of £2,400 by an unnamed broker claiming to arrange his medical, get him through his HGV theory and practical tests, and get him driving experience and maybe a job with high street operators.
Despite claiming affiliation with the Road Haulage Association, all the company provided was a medical and a provisional HGV licence.
Sean Pargeter, director of EP Training and long-time campaigner against brokers, appeared in the programme to warn of the dangers of web-based ‘national’ training companies offering packages of training and recruitment.
“People are being sold an easy fast track to making serious money,” Pargeter told the BBC. “In reality they employ no instructors and have no vehicles, and their ‘jobs’ are just taken from other web sites.”
Pargeter advised would-be new drivers to visit training centres in their area to see the facilities they could offer and never part with money over the phone.
